Media Specialist Cites Multiple Benefits Reaped from NCT Demonstration Grant
October 2006

Teachers at Riverbend Elementary now have better access to technology, and they're using it to boost student success.

haywoodCLYDE, NC - This year the North Carolina Technology Association (NCTA) brought one of its federal technology demonstration grants to Western North Carolina.

Riverbend Elementary is a small, rural school in Haywood County, southwest of Asheville. Teachers received new technology and professional development to use it effectively. During a celebration to mark the culmination of the project, media specialist Teresa Cook told a group of educators and supporters the project actually changed classrooms and the school environment, and helped the school "lessen the digital divide."

"The Technology Demonstration Project has provided our students with the 21st Century tools necessary for accessing information and demonstrating new knowledge and sills needed to be competitive in a rapidly evolving global society," she said. "And of equal importance, they think it is REALLY COOL."

Cook says the NCTA project has benefitted the school in many ways:

  • Innovative technology is now readily accessible on a daily basis;
  • Teachers are collaborating and sharing new ideas;
  • Teachers feel empowered in their teaching, as lessons hav soared to new levels and reach beyond the clsasroom walls.
  • They are better able to differentiate activities for student needs, incorporate various learning styles, increase critical thinking skills, and motivate high risk students by providing a more engaging learning environment.

Cook expressed great appreciation to NCTA and political supporters including Congressman Charles Taylor for making the grant available to Riverbend.
